Trumpet Maintenance

How-To Oil Trumpet Valves

As part of our mission to improve the lives of instruments everywhere (and share the knowledge of how to do so) we present our first ‘How-To’ post.

Trumpets are one of the most common instruments in our workshop and one of the best things you can do as a player to keep it playing smoothly is to regularly oil your valves. The valves are the part of the trumpet you press with your fingers and that go up and down. It is recommended to put a couple of drops of valve oil on each valve each time you play. This does require pulling the valve out part way and it is important when you put it back in that it realigns. Each valve must go stay in the casing it comes out of as they aren’t interchangeable and if they are put in the wrong spot, the trumpet will not play. We are absolutely happy to show you how to do this at our workshop and we’ve found this video on Youtube explaining it as well.
